VMI defeats The Citadel in Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The VMI basketball team took down The Citadel for the second time in three years at McAlister Fieldhouse as the Keydets earned a 75-70 SoCon victory Saturday afternoon in Charleston, South Carolina.

The win moves VMI to 8-11, 2-4 in conference play while the Bulldogs fall to 5-12, 0-6 in the league.

VMI's victory is significant in that it marked the Keydets' second league victory in a row, which had not happened in three years since the 2021-22 season. It was VMI's second win over the Bulldogs in three tries and improves VMI's record in the all-time series to 61-62, which VMI will try to even when the schools meet again in Lexington on February 8.

It was also VMI's eighth victory of the season to double its win total from a year ago. The Keydets now have four Division 1 victories during the 2024-25 season to show their progression under head coach Andrew Wilson.

VMI Head Coach Andrew Wilson
"I'm so proud of everyone in the program. This was a great win versus our rivals who were hungry for a win. We have continued to fight and improve every day despite having some tough outcomes along the way. We have great leadership and maturity on our team and we are growing more confident as a unit every time out."

Game Summary
After trailing by five early on, the Keydets led for much of the contest by gaining a nine-point lead midway through the opening half and a 17-point lead with just over four minutes left in regulation. The Citadel made comebacks in spurts throughout the game to keep it competitive until the final buzzer, but the Keydets made enough plays down the stretch in both halves to keep the Bulldogs at bay.
