Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

VMI takes down The Citadel for second straight year

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Down 1-0 at the half, the VMI women's soccer team rallied for a 2-1 win over rival The Citadel on a wet and windy Thursday afternoon at WLI Field in Charleston, South Carolina.

The victory marks the second straight year VMI (5-5-1) has defeated the Bulldogs in comeback fashion as the Keydets rallied for a 3-2 win over The Citadel in 2023 after being down 2-0 at the half at Drill Field #2 in Lexington. It is also the first time since the 2016-17 seasons that VMI has taken down the Bulldogs twice in a row.

Due to the incoming potential hazards from Hurricane Helene, the game was moved up to a noon kickoff in place of its originally scheduled time of 3 p.m.

The win marked VMI's first conference victory of the season and gives the Keydets five wins on the year, their most since earning seven in 2018. The Citadel falls to 4-5-2 overall and 0-3 in SoCon play.

Game Summary
*The Bulldogs scored in the third minute of the game (2:45) when Samantha Grantham rebounded a shot that deflected off VMI keeper Whitney Tracy and snuck it into the lower left corner for an early 1-0 Citadel advantage
*VMI senior Delilah Martindale scored her first career goal, which came in a timely manner as an equalizer just two minutes into the second half (46:34). She took a long cross from Cadee Hegarty and got a foot on it to boost the ball over the outstretched reach of Citadel keeper Grace Laws
*Later in the second half, sophomore Barrett Callejo penetrated the Bulldog defense and was clipped from behind in the goalbox to earn a PK opportunity, which she converted in the 62nd minute (61:03) in what ultimately became the game-winning goal with under 30 minutes to play. It was her third game-winning goal of the season, which ties for second all-time in program history for GWGs in a single season

VMI Head Coach Chris Haught-Thompson
"I'm incredibly proud of our fight today. Coming back from an early goal is hard, but we kept chipping away. Delilah scored an awesome goal and Barrett worked hard to earn her penalty and goal. It's great to get our first SoCon win of the year and we're looking forward to Western Carolina next week."
