Keydets fall in home contest to Western Carolina

LEXINGTON, Va. – The VMI women's soccer team fell to visiting Southern Conference foe Western Carolina by a 5-0 score Thursday afternoon at Patchin Field to resume league play on its home turf.
 
First Half Summary
*The Catamounts scored early in the match as Naya Marcil put Western Carolina on the board in the ninth minute (8:36) off a pass from Isabella DeMarco in what came to be the game-winning goal
*Western would go on to put two more goals in the opening half when Abbie Lainhart scored consecutive goals in the 39th (38:37) and 40th (39:46) minutes. Her first goal was nearly a VMI own goal in which the ball bounced off the crossbar from a VMI defender's deflection and Lainhart tapped in the rebound. Lainhart then found the back of the net again one minute later after forward connections from teammates Kirsten Hahn and Malia Roberts to give the Catamounts a 3-0 lead going into the break
 
Second Half Summary
*Fifteen minutes into the second half, WCU's Isabella DeMarco took a cross from Marcil and put the ball into the VMI net for a 4-0 Western lead with 30 minutes to play
*The Catamounts scored their final tally in the 78th minute when Hahn took a cross from Christina Layton and knocked in one additional score

*The Catamounts earned 22 shot attempts during the match to go with eight corner kick opportunities
*Western keeper Leanne Trudel earned her seventh shutout of the season in 79 minutes after logging two saves. VMI's Whitney Tracy played 64 minutes and had four saves on the afternoon before she was replaced by Brookelynn Webster, who earned two saves in the final 25 minutes
