Keydets drop SoCon road game at Furman

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Tied at 1-1 at the break, the VMI women's soccer team fell by a 5-1 score to host Furman University Sunday afternoon at Stone Stadium in Greenville, South Carolina.
 
With the loss, the Keydets fall to 4-5-1 on the season and 0-2 in league play while Furman improves to 5-4-2 and 1-0-1 in the SoCon.
 
Scoring Summary
*Furman's Nieva Gaither put the Paladins on the board first with a goal in the 16th minute (15:14) as she took consecutive passes from Ellie Herrmann and Tara Katz to sneak the ball into the bottom right corner of the VMI net
 
*VMI sophomore Barrett Callejo responded with a Keydet goal in the 25th minute (24:50) on an unassisted goal into the top center of the box
 
*Katz of Furman logged the game-winning goal in the 55th minute of the second half on an unassisted goal shot into the bottom right corner of the VMI net to put the Paladins back up, 2-1, with 35 minutes remaining
 
*The Paladins added an insurance goal in the 64th minute (63:48) when Valentina Mosquera struck the ball into the bottom right corner to make the score 3-1 with just over 25 minutes left in regulation
 
*Furman was awarded a penalty kick late in the match due to a foul within the VMI goalbox. Ashlyn Goila converted the PK opportunity in the 85th minute (84:24) for Furman's fourth tally.
 
*The game's final tally came in the closing minutes (87:53) when Furman's Lexy Faklaris took an assist from Madison Luckett and knocked it in
