Keydets fall to UNCG to open conference play

LEXINGTON, Va. – Despite an early 1-0 lead in the opening half, the VMI women's soccer team fell by a 5-1 score to visiting UNCG Thursday evening at Patchin Field to open Southern Conference play.
 
In the 14th minute (13:25), VMI's Cadee Hegarty was clipped from behind within the UNCG goalbox to set up a penalty kick opportunity. Teammate Riley Boucher stepped up to the challenge and knocked it home into the lower left corner to give the Keydets (4-4-1, 0-1) the early 1-0 advantage.
 
Shortly after, both teams were escorted to their locker rooms due to a weather delay as lightning came within 10 miles of Lexington with about 25 minutes before halftime.
 
Game Summary
*VMI managed to hang on to the 1-0 lead going into the break
*The Keydets stood firm until the final 18 minutes of the match when the Spartans (2-5-2, 1-0) employed an offensive outbreak to score five goals before the end of regulation
*Mel Herrera of UNCG knotted the score at 1-1 off an assist from Nicole Hutchinson in the 73rd minute (72:25)
*One minute later, UNCG's Rachel Poplin gave the Spartans the game-winning goal off a pass from Mairead Gayer at the 73:04 mark
*Merle Greulich scored consecutive goals for UNCG in the 79th (78:40) and 82nd minutes (81:10) off assists from Ava Kiss and Bailey Gourdine
*Kiss notched one more goal for the Spartans in the 86th minute (85:23) for the game's final tally
