Keydets drop 4-1 contest to USC Upstate

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – In a game delayed by two hours and ultimately cut short late in the second half due to lightning, the VMI women's soccer team dropped its first contest of the season as the Keydets fell by a 4-1 score to host USC Upstate Friday night in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Slated for a 7 p.m. start, the game kicked off at 9 p.m. due to dangerous playing conditions given the poor weather.

Game Summary
*The Spartans (3-1) jumped to a 2-0 lead in the opening half off goals by Nya Baccelli in the 29th minute followed by a PK conversion minutes later (32:55) by Dara Russo
*Upstate's Paige Armstrong upped the lead to 3-0 for the Spartans early in the second half off a goal in the 50th minute (49:40) for an insurance goal
*VMI's Riley Boucher avoided a shutout for the Keydets by scoring a goal in the 73rd minute (72:01) as she took a pass from Gianna De Cicco and Paige Becker and sailed it over the fingertips of Spartan goalie Meghan Groah into the back of the net

*Morgan De Barros of USC Upstate put the game out of reach in the 77th minute with another Spartan goal to seal the victory
*The match was called with 13:42 remaining on the clock as lightning again appeared within a 10-mile radius as the coaches agreed to forego the remainder of the contest
*Lauren Fyfe led VMI with three shot attempts on the night while Sedona Dancu contributed two
*VMI goalie Whitney Tracy earned three saves in the loss while Upstate's Groah logged five on the other end of the pitch
