Keydets top American for 1-0 victory

VMI earns first 2-0 start since 2018

LEXINGTON, Va. – Looking for a second straight win to open the season, the VMI women's soccer team accomplished the feat by defeating visiting American University by a 1-0 score Sunday afternoon at Patchin Field.

The 2-0 start is the best for VMI since opening the 2018 campaign with a 6-0-1 mark.  The victory also equals the all-time series at two games apiece in four contests dating back to 2017. The Keydets defeated the Eagles by a 1-0 tally in overtime in 2018 in American's only prior visit to Lexington.

The Keydets (2-0) got on the board in the 59th minute (58:09) off a penalty kick. VMI's Barrett Callejo was taken down from behind in the American box to earn the scoring opportunity and found the back of the net in what came to be the game-winning goal.

How it Happened
*American came out swinging in the opening half to earn a 7-2 shots advantage over the opening 45 minutes but could not convert to go into the break tied at 0-0
*The Eagles continued to earn shot opportunities in the second stanza by outshooting the Keydets by an 11-3 margin in the latter half. In total, American put up 18 shot attempts to VMI's five throughout the contest
*American earned six corner kick opportunities to two for VMI
*VMI keeper Whitney Tracy earned her second individual win of the year and fourth career victory by totaling four saves on on the afternoon. American freshman goalie Addison Roemer logged one save during the game
*Callejo and VMI senior Isabella Bruzonic led the Keydets with two shot apiece while Sedona Dancu had one. On the other end, American's Avery Klingensmith finished the game with six shot attempts while Lailah Stewart and Bella Miller both had three

VMI Head Coach Chris Haught-Thompson
"With Matriculation starting yesterday, you never know how the energy is going to be. The thing that's separating the team right now is its belief and desire. We're not playing the prettiest, but we're finding a way to win games and finding a way to create chances. Being gritty resembles this place and resembles this group. We got the chance that we needed and found another 1-0 victory. I'm proud of how they're fighting."
