LEXINGTON, Va.
– Looking for a strong start to the 2024 season, the VMI women's soccer team earned a 1-0 win over visiting Davidson College Thursday afternoon at Patchin Field.

Freshman Emma Rice – who notched a goal in VMI's scrimmage with Radford last Sunday – took a loose ball deep in Davidson territory with 10 minutes left in regulation (80:48) and launched it into the upper right corner of the net for her first official career goal at VMI and game-winning shot.

The victory is VMI's first season-opening win over a Division 1 opponent since a 2-0 victory over Hampton to open the 2018 season. The Keydets did earn a 5-0 win over Southern Virginia to open the 2020-21 spring Covid season.

The unsung hero of the game for VMI was senior Whitney Tracy, who logged eight saves during the match, including a diving save with 25 minutes left to play just moments before Rice's game-winning goal on the other end of the pitch.

The Big Win
*The win marked VMI's first-ever victory over the Wildcats after the two previous contests from 2019 and 2020-21 resulted in draws
*Senior Lauren Fyfe led VMI with two shot attempts on the day while Barrett Callejo, Mia Ortega and Rice recorded one apiece
*Davidson came close to scoring on numerous occasions led by three shots from Aleia Gisolfi-McCready and two from both Katy Talotta and Dakota Lyons

VMI Head Coach Chris Haught-Thompson
"I thought we battled so hard. Davidson did some really good things and we definitely escaped a couple of scares. I want to shout out to Whitney Tracy – she made the save of the year in our first game, and we don't win the game without that save. We were physical and we competed. We did all the things we were trying to do. We learned some things in our friendly with Radford the other day. We didn't shoot as much as we would have liked, but we got into some good spaces. The one that we took counted for us."

Tracy gets the W
*Senior keeper Whitney Tracy earned her third career individual victory with the shutout after logging eight saves throughout the match. The Wildcats finished with 15 shot attempts on the day to go with six corner kick opportunities
