Lacrosse hosts Wagner in MAAC midweek matchup

LEXINGTON, Va. – With the Keydets fighting for a MAAC playoff spot with three games remaining in the regular season, the VMI lacrosse team will play host to Wagner College on Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m. on Drill Field #2.

The Keydets are coming off a close 9-8 loss on the road this past Saturday up at Manhattan College in Riverdale, New York. Down 9-6 midway through the final period, the Keydets rallied to score two goals in the final six minutes of the contest but could not get another as the Jaspers escaped with the win on their home turf.
 
Eight different Keydets scored in the game, including junior attack Luke Rusterucci, who extended his consecutive games with a goal to 30, the seventh-longest scoring streak in the country. His 2.73 goals per game is tied for No. 23 in the nation and he also averages 2.77 assists per game, 20th best mark in the NCAA.
 
VMI is one of the top clearing teams in the nation at 90.8 percents having successfully cleared 227 of 250 attempts through 12 games.
 
About the Seahawks (1-11, 1-5)
Wagner College got off to a slow start to the season with five consecutive losses before surprising Marist College by a 9-8 score to open MAAC play back on March 9. After a home loss to nationally ranked North Carolina, Wagner has fallen in five consecutive league matches to Quinnipiac, Mount St. Mary's, LIU, Siena and Sacred Heart.
 
Wagner and Mount St. Mary's are presently tied for ninth in the league standings with 1-5 conference records, while VMI and Marist – both 2-4 in league action - are tied for the final No. 6 MAAC Tournament playoff spot.
 
Nick Martini leads the Seahawks with 18 goals on the year and team-high 19 points. James Rea is second on the team with 11 goals, while Patrick Caldwell is close behind with nine through 12 games played.
 
Giovanni Armocida is the top defender with 17 caused turnovers on the year and Tristan McMahon ranks second with 12.
 
Rudy Zarate has played all but 75 minutes in the cage and owns a 13.69 goals-against average to go with 135 saves for a .479 save percentage.
