Morgan goes the distance, Starke breaks record in electric win over Citadel

LEXINGTON, Va. – VMI Baseball (22-20, 5-6 SoCon) notched its fifth Southern Conference victory after a prevailing 10-2 decision over The Citadel (17-20, 1-10 SoCon) at Gray-Minor Stadium Saturday afternoon.

The Keydets even up the series after posting eight unanswered runs against the Bulldogs. VMI will look to take the series tomorrow with an opportunity to move up in the SoCon standings.
 
Key Stats
- Trey Morgan tossed his second complete game of 2024 and first-career nine-inning complete game to earn his third win on the bump
- Morgan also produced big numbers at the plate, going 3-for-5 with three RBI and a home run
- Justin Starke broke the all-time runs scored record after crossing the plate in the first frame
- Ty Swaim and Kazuya Jordan each tallied two hits
- Every Keydet in the lineup earned at least one hit
- VMI tallied three triples
- Morgan extended his on-base streak to 28 games

- VMI opened up the scoring in the opening frame with Starke nabbing an RBI single and later scoring on a Grayson Fitzwater RBI to make it 2-0
- Citadel got both runs back in the second, but the Keydets answered quickly after Cole Jenkins drove in a run off a single followed by a Morgan two-RBI single
- With a 5-2 lead going into the sixth, Jed Barrett scored on a ground out
- In the seventh inning, the Keydets blew the doors open, scoring four times
- Morgan kicked off the inning with a solo shot to right-center field
- Swaim and Jordan knocked in back-to-back singles to drive in a pair of runs
- Jenkins forced in another run off a sacrifice fly
