Keydets fall to App State to finish road swing

BOONE, N.C. – The VMI wrestling team concluded a three-match road swing with a 32-7 loss to host Appalachian State Sunday afternoon at Varsity Gym in Boone, North Carolina.
 
Starting at the 141-pound weight class, VMI's Patrick Jordon battled hard but ultimately fell by a 2-1 decision in a tiebreaker extra period. Ryan Vigil followed up and gave an equally tough battle with App State's #20-ranked Cody Bond before falling by a close 6-3 decision.
 
At 157 and 165 pounds, VMI lost both bouts to ranked wrestlers by tech fall which ballooned ASU's lead to 16-0 after four bouts. Josh Yost lost to #17 Tommy Askey at 157 pounds, 19-3, before Luke Hart also lost by tech fall to ASU's #27 Will Miller at 165 by a 16-1 count.
 
VMI 174-pounder Braxton Lewis put VMI on the board with an impressive 13-0 major decision over App State's Logan Eller to cut the team score deficit to 16-4 in favor of the Mountaineers.
 
 
At the heavyweight class, VMI senior Tyler Mousaw battled a high-scoring bout with ASU's Jacob Sartorio. The two traded takedowns and near-fall points as Sartorio outlasted Mousaw by a slim 16-14 margin.
 
In the final bout at 133 pounds, VMI's Dyson Dunham finished the match strong for the Keydets by earning a 9-5 decision over App State's Noah Luna to provide three more team points for VMI.
 

 
Up Next
The Keydets return home for three straight matches including two this upcoming Friday, February 9.
VMI will wrestle SoCon foe Bellarmine at 1 p.m. before facing Long Island (LIU) in a non-conference match at 5 p.m. at Cormack Hall.
