Hot start propels VMI Baseball to 12-1 win in series opener

LEXINGTON, Va. – Behind a five-homer performance at the plate, the VMI Baseball team (3-3) exploded for a 12-1 run-rule win over Georgetown in the home opener on Friday.
 
Key Stats
-Grayson Fitzwater belted two home runs to record his first career multi-homer game
-Cole Jenkins, Justin Starke and Cole Raile also hit homers in the win
-Five homers matches 2023 season-high(Western Carolina, Norfolk St.)
-Trey Morgan threw a complete game and picked up the win in the shortened seven-inning contest
-Morgan conceded just one run, walked none and struck out six
-All nine starters recorded at least one hit for the first time this season
-Raile, Fitzwater, Jenkins and Ty Swaim all recorded multi-hit games
-VMI struck out only three times
 
How It Happened
-After blanking the Hoyas in the top of the 1st inning, VMI scored four runs in their first trip to the plate
- Jenkins drove home Owen Prince before scoring on a wild pitch; the Keydets rounded out the frame with Fitzwater's two-run blast to left-center field
-The Hoyas responded with three hits in the second, but they failed to score after Prince threw out a Georgetown baserunner at third base before the lead runner could cross home plate
-Morgan helped himself in the bottom of the 2nd inning with a two-RBI single to extend the lead to 6-0
-Both pitching staffs responded in the 3rd inning with zero runs on the board
-Starke's leadoff homer in the 4th inning extended the lead to 7-1
-VMI took a double-digit lead with five runs in the 6th inning behind three VMI homers
-The Hoyas recorded a sac fly in the 7th inning to avoid the shutout before the game ended 12-1 due to the agreed-upon run rule

-This is the second time VMI has held an opponent to one run through the first six games
-Prince has hit safely in his first six games and holds a .625 on-base percentage
-Jenkins now has three multi-RBI games on the young season
-Fitzwater's five-RBI day is a new career-high
