Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Second-half rally comes up short in loss at ETSU

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Down 52-30 at the break, the VMI basketball team rallied to outscore host ETSU by a 39-30 margin in the second half but the deficit proved too large as the Bucs pulled away for an 82-69 win over the Keydets Wednesday night at Freedom Hall in Johnson City, Tennessee.

Fighting to the end, VMI (4-24, 1-14) pulled within 10 at the 6:53 mark of the second half off a Butler And-1 after Jackson heaved the ball downcourt to DJ Nussbaum, who skipped it over to Butler who was fouled as his layup went in.

The Keydets then brought the deficit to eight when Butler and Jackson combined forces to steal the ball. Butler scrambled with the ball past midcourt and bumped it forward to Jackson, who converted the layup and put VMI within single digits at 72-64 with 6:36 to play following a 12-0 VMI run.

VMI could get no closer, however, as the Keydets went cold down the final stretch and the Bucs did just enough to sustain the lead and pull away in the final minutes. The Bucs (14-14, 6-9) grabbed an insurmountable 16-point lead with 3:02 left in regulation to keep the Keydets at bay in crunch time.

Jackson earned his ninth double-double of the season and 14th of his career by registering a team-high 18 points on 7-for-11 shooting from the field to go with 11 rebounds.
