Keydets earn dominant 25-6 victory over Hampton

HAMPTON, Va. – On the road for a second straight game, the VMI lacrosse team earned a dominant 25-6 victory over Hampton University Tuesday evening at Armstrong Stadium in Hampton, Virginia.

With the high scoring output, VMI (2-2) tied for the second-most goals for a single game in program history, matching the 25 goals VMI put up against Hampton back on April 2, 2016. VMI Head Coach James Purpura earned his 13th career win at the helm to tie for second-most all-time in VMI's 41-year program for lacrosse.

Individually, junior attack Luke Rusterucci tied his career high with six goals to go with five assists for 11 total points – second most for a single game in program history. Charles Hunt also had a career game accounting for eight points on a career-best six goals in addition to two assists.  The eight points for Hunt is tied for fourth most for a single game in school history.

The five assists by both Rusterucci and senior AJ Stamos ties for fourth most in a single game in team history.

VMI Head Coach James Purpura
"Today was a total team effort. I'm proud of our guys for coming out ready and prepared. We were able to get a big run early and from there we were able to finish it out. Offensively, we shared the ball but our attack played really strong. We had 11 different goal scorers. A lot of the goals were assisted and our guys shot the ball well. The extra man unit also was efficient. Defensively, we played very well and a few early stops allowed us to get going offensively.

"When we did have a breakdown, our goalies made some nice saves. Jack Rogers and the rest of our face off group did a great job at the FO X to secure a lot of extra possessions. Today was great in that we got a lot of guys who have been working hard in practice some game experience and some of those men got their first experience playing Division I lacrosse. We look forward to getting back home to play a strong opponent in St. Bonaventure at Drill Field #2 on Saturday."
