LEXINGTON, Va.
– The VMI lacrosse team earned a 17-9 victory over St. Bonaventure on an overcast and chilly Saturday afternoon at Drill Field #2.

VMI improves to 3-2 on the young season as the Keydets earned their first win over the Bonnies (0-4) in program history (was previously 0-2). It also marked VMI's first ever win over an Atlantic 10 opponent.

Attackman Charles Hunt – coming off six goals at Hampton earlier this week – earned a new career high with seven goals today against the Bonnies, the third most individual goals for a single game in program history. Also tallying an assist for the day, his eight points ranks fourth most for a single game in program history.

Fellow attack Luke Rusterucci had four assists on the afternoon, which ties for fourth most for a single game in program annals. He now has 120 points for his VMI career to enter the Top 10 in program history at No. 10.

In addition, VMI fourth-year head coach James Purpura earned his 14th career win at the helm Saturday, which lies solely in second place in all-time wins in the team record book.

VMI head coach James Purpura
"I'm really proud of the guys today. They got rewarded for the effort they put in. We finished our third game in eight days and earned a big win. It was a total team effort. It started at the face off X and Jack Rogers and the wings did a great job securing ground balls. They earned us extra possessions. Offensively, we were balanced in our scoring and in the way we scored. We shot the ball well and were led on that front by Charles Hunt, who had a big day with seven goals. Defensively, we played solid team defense and held our opponent to under 10 goals. Adam Norris had a big day in the cage. Overall, it was a great week for VMI lacrosse. We will get back to work this week and start preparing for a good Detroit Mercy team."
