Keydets downed by Gardner-Webb in SoCon road contest

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The VMI wrestling team grabbed an early 6-3 lead over host Gardner-Webb following a pin by heavyweight Tyler Mousaw but could not sustain the momentum as the Bulldogs earned a 28-10 league victory over the Keydets Sunday afternoon in Boiling Springs, North Carolina.

Mousaw won in exciting fashion by earning a reversal early in the second period over Gardner-Webb's Peyton McComas and putting him on his back for a pin at the 3:22 mark to give VMI (9-10, 2-5) a 6-3 lead after two bouts. The match started at the 197-pound weight class.

Gardner-Webb (7-7, 3-3) responded by winning the next six consecutive bouts, including a major decision at 125 followed by five straight wins by decision to jump to a commanding 22-6 lead over the Keydets.

At 174 pounds, Braxton Lewis gave VMI another individual win for the day by defeating Gardner-Webb's Sam Mora by a 10-1 major decision to trim the deficit to 22-10 in favor of the Bulldogs.

Gardner-Webb finished the Senior Day match with Jha'Quan Anderson pinning VMI's Ethan Barrett for the final team score of 28-10, the Bulldogs' third SoCon win of the season to edge out VMI for fifth place in the conference standings with only a few weeks before the SoCon Championships.
