VMI Wrestling drops close contest to Davidson, 24-19

LEXINGTON, Va. – Although the VMI wrestling team jumped to a 16-3 lead after four bouts, the Keydets could not sustain the advantage as visiting SoCon foe Davidson College escaped Cormack Hall with a 24-19 win over the Keydets Friday night in Lexington.

VMI (9-9, 2-4) earned a major decision at 125 by Tony Burke to open the match before 133-pounder Dyson Dunham pinned Davidson's Hale Robinson in 1:05 to increase VMI's team lead to 10-0 after two bouts.

Davidson (2-13, 1-5) rebounded with a win at 141 when Joshua Viarengo defeated VMI's Patrick Jordon by an 11-8 decision, but VMI responded with another pin at 149 pounds when Keydet Ryan Vigil registered a fall in the third period (6:11) to put VMI up, 16-3, with six bouts remaining.

The Wildcats came on strong in the latter half to hold VMI to just one more win on the night at 174 pounds when Braxton Lewis topped Davidson's Marc Koch by a hard-fought 2-0 decision.

Davidson took the lead at 197 pounds after Cameo Blankenship topped VMI's Josh Evans, 4-1, in a sudden-victory decision to give the Wildcats a 21-19 lead with only the heavyweights left to wrestle.

Last week, VMI heavyweight Tyler Mousaw earned a dramatic victory by fall to lift VMI to its win over LIU, but could not pull off the magic again versus Davidson's Jake Fernicola as Fernicola achieved a grueling 11-9 decision win over Mousaw to secure the road win over the Keydets.
