VMI falls at Furman to open road trip

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Down just 39-34 at the half, the VMI basketball team fell behind in the second half as host Furman rallied for a 75-62 win over the Keydets Wednesday night at Timmons Arena in Greenville, South Carolina.
 
VMI (4-22, 1-12) sophomore Taeshaud Jackson II recorded his eighth double-double of the season and 13th of his career by registering 14 points on the night to go with 12 boards. He also had two steals and an assist.


 
Freshman Maurice Wright, Jr., played his best game of the season coming off the bench and tallying a season-high 13 points - including a season-high three treys - to go with a season-high three steals on the other end.


 
Several other freshmen stepped up in the loss as Corey Chesley earned a season-high two steals and AJ Clark grabbed a season-high seven rebounds.
 
The Paladins (14-12, 8-5) pulled away in the second half and led by as many as 20 points with 8:29 to play following a 15-0 run midway through the period.

*The VMI defense clamped down on Furman to cause 14 Paladin turnovers leading to 19 points for VMI on the other end of the court
*The Keydets went cold from beyond the arc during the game and hit four of 18 attempts during the contest
*Furman slightly won the battle in the post by recording 38 points to VMI's 32 and had 14 second-chance points to VMI's 10
*Both teams had equal production from the bench as VMI total 29 points from reserves to Furman's 28
*Furman was led by Ben VanderWal's 15 points on the night while JP Pegues totaled 14. Marcus Foster was close behind with 13 points and Garrett Hien contributed nine
