Keydets fall to ETSU in regular season finale

LEXINGTON, Va. – Hoping to close the 2024 regular season on a strong note, the VMI women's soccer team fell by a 3-1 score to visiting ETSU Sunday afternoon at Patchin Field.
 
With the loss, the Keydets fall to 6-10-2 overall and 1-7-1 in conference play while the Bucs improve to 4-7-4, 3-3-3.
 
VMI will enter the opening round of Tuesday's SoCon Tournament as the No. 9 seed and will travel to face No. 8 seed Wofford College at 6 p.m. in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
 
Scoring Summary
* ETSU forward Natalie Capannelli converted a penalty kick in the 11th minute of the match (10:39) for the first score of the match
* In the 28th minute (27:55), the Bucs' Jada Cooper dribbled outside the VMI goalbox for a bit before striking the ball into the upper right corner of the net for what proved to be the game-winning goal
* The Bucs were granted another PK opportunity in the 60th minute (59:07) after VMI goalie Whitney Tracy was accused of interfering with an ETSU scoring opportunity in the box. Ruby Teixeira converted the penalty shot for ETSU's third and final tally of the game.
*VMI senior Sedona Dancu put the Keydets on the scoreboard in the 68th minute (67:53) as she took a cross from Mia Ortega and slotted the ball into the lower left corner of the ETSU net for the Keydets' lone goal to avoid the shutout

*ETSU took a total of nine corner kicks throughout the game
*Barrett Callejo and Dancu led the Keydets with two shots apiece, while ETSU's Capannelli, Teixeira and Madi Hook each had three on the other end of the pitch
