VMI fights to the end in 3-2 loss at Wofford

Keydets finish season with six wins, best since 2018 campaign

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The 2024 season came to a close Tuesday night for the No. 9 seed VMI women's soccer team as the Keydets battled hard but came up short as host No. 8 Wofford earned a 3-2 win at Snyder Field in the opening round of the Southern Conference Tournament.
 
VMI finishes the year with a 6-11-2 overall record and 1-7-1 mark in the league. The Terriers (6-11-2) advance to the tournament quarterfinals to play at No. 1 seed Western Carolina Friday night in Cullowhee, North Carolina.
 
The six wins for VMI on the season marked its most victories since claiming seven during the 2018 season.

Scoring Summary
* The schools battled to a 0-0 draw at halftime
* Both teams came out firing in the second half, with Wofford's Megan Childress scoring first off an assist from Kate Markey at the 53:30 mark
* Childress earned a brace moments later (61:09) after she took a pass from Elle Gower and snuck the ball into the lower right corner of the VMI net
* With a just under 12 minutes left in regulation (78:11), VMI senior Isabella Bruzonic took a free kick assist from Gianna De Cicco and slammed the ball from well outside the goalbox into the upper left corner of the Wofford net to cut the deficit to 2-1
* Wofford earned the game-winning goal just a few minutes afterward (82:21) when reserve Aly Bernhard scored her first career goal off a corner kick from Gower to up the Terrier lead to 3-1 with under eight minutes to play
* VMI junior Riley Boucher kept the Keydets' hopes up in the final moments of the match as she took a helper from De Cicco and hit a one-touch floater toward the Terrier net, which bounced off the post and into the goal for the final score of the match. The goal was her ninth of the season, which ties for fifth all-time in the VMI record book for goals in a single season
