Game Recap: Football |

VMI Football falls at No. 19 Chattanooga

LEXINGTON, Va. – The VMI Football Team visited 19th-ranked Chattanooga (5-3, 4-1 SoCon) on Saturday, keeping it a one-score game until the third quarter before falling to the Mocs 31-10.

"They're a good team," said VMI Head Coach Danny Rocco. "I think this is a playoff team we saw here today. It's just disappointing we couldn't keep it close. In the second half we were unable to move the ball until the end."

Key Stats
- Chattanooga scores four rushing touchdowns, quarterback Chase Artopoeus has two as they win time-of-possession battle 36-24
- VMI is 4-of-13 on third downs, Chattanooga goes 10-for-17
- Reggie Davis goes for 134 yards and a score on the ground for the Mocs
- Brady Hammonds has a career-high 134 yards, connects with Egypt Nelson (2 catches, 58 yards) for a touchdown
- Keydet defense, Terrell Jackson (3.0 tackles, 1.0 TFL) force a fumble that leads to points
- Eric Rankin, Shamus Jones each collect 10.0 tackles; Rankin adds a sack and a quarterback hurry

What's Next
VMI (0-8, 0-4 SoCon) returns home for its next two contests, hosting Furman on Saturday.

Rocco's Remarks
On the First Halt
"We started the game and gave up a long, methodical drive. Made it feel like it might be a long afternoon but we made some adjustments which really gave us a chance. Offensively we put a good drive together and we went into the locker room feeling pretty good about where we were at, knowing in the second half we would have to score some points and move the football."

How it Happened
First Half

- Aslin Shipe opens with a good return, but Chattanooga holds and takes over with good field position after a punt, Artopoeus runs it in from 17 yards out  (8:06, 1st)
- Brady Hammonds takes a hit and delivers a 26-yard strike to Egypt Nelson to give VMI a 10-7 advantage with 10:54 in the 2nd

- The ball began to bounce Chattanooga's way, as the Mocs got an interception via replay, a dead-ball delay of game call to extend a drive that ultimately led to an Artopoeus for a 23-yard touchdown run to give Chattanooga the lead (3:40) going into the break

Second Half
- Keydets force a quick third down, but Artopoeus scrambles for 32 yards to pick up the first as Reggie Davis punches in a two-yard score (21-10, 8:42 3rd)
- Chattanooga's next drive would last nearly seven minutes, opening the fourth quarter with its fourth rushing touchdown on the day (28-10, 14:56 4th), adding a field goal late to take the game 31-10
