SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The VMI Football Team scored 13 unanswered points to start the second half, but a 95-yard touchdown reception by Wofford flipped all the momentum back to the Terriers, as the Keydets would fall on the road 31-16.
"We're crushed," said Head Coach Danny Rocco. "This is a game we lead in the fourth quarter. In the second half our defense was categorically in control of the game. We took a lead, had them pinned back and it was a coverage communication bust…it's disappointing."
Key Stats
- Keydets turn the ball over five times (three fumbles, two interceptions)
- Wofford outgains VMI 349-180 despite three interceptions by the Keydets
- Shamus Jones has 41-yard interception for a touchdown; Noel Innocent (4.0 tackles), Joe Comello (2.0 tackles, FF) each pick off the Terriers
- Keydets block two punts (Jonathan Hunter-Horton/partial) including one by Kouri Crump recovered by Nathan Lhotsky for a touchdown
- Eric Rankin, Stephen Dean each record 7.0 tackles
- Hunter Rice has 73 yards on the ground as Brady Hammonds goes 12-for-21 for 86 yards and an interception
What's Next
The Keydets now drop to 0-6 (0-2 SoCon) while Wofford moves to an even 3-3 (1-2 SoCon). VMI returns home for its next contest, hosting The Citadel on Saturday for the Battle of The Silver Shako.
Rocco's Remarks
On the Offensive Struggles
"Offensively we couldn't get the ball in the end zone. Hunter (Rice) had a solid game rushing the football but we score on defense, special teams and we just couldn't come up with enough firepower offensively."
On The Citadel
"It's all hands-on deck this week. The 'All in' mindset this week. I was able to at least move everything forward as we wrap up this emotional loss and now we put the target on beating The Citadel as we focus in on next week."
