Wrestling falls to The Citadel on the road

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The VMI wrestling team battled hard against its rival but fell by a 35-3 score Sunday afternoon at McAlister Field House in Charleston, South Carolina.

VMI 174-pounder Braxton Lewis won the sole bout of the day for the Keydets (6-7, 0-2) as he earned a hard-fought 3-2 decision over The Citadel's Brodie Porter to put VMI on the board.

The Citadel (9-3, 1-1) won the first six bouts of the contest by opening with two decision victories followed by two tech falls at 141 and 149 pounds. The Bulldogs picked up two more wins – a decision at 157 and a major decision at 165 – before Lewis' victory at 174 for VMI.

Hoping for a final push to finish strong, the Keydets were defeated in the final three weight classes as The Citadel won its first conference victory of the season.

The Keydets return to the mat next weekend and will remain on the road to face Presbyterian Saturday at 2 p.m. in Clinton, S.C., before heading north to face Appalachian State Sunday at 2 p.m. in Boone, N.C.
