Keydets show grit in hard-fought loss to Chattanooga

LEXINGTON, Va. – After a loss by forfeit in the opening bout at 125 pounds, the VMI wrestling team showed fight in by winning four of the remaining nine matches as the visiting Chattanooga Mocs defeated VMI by a 31-13 score Sunday afternoon in the Southern Conference opener at Cormack Hall.

The Keydets (6-6, 0-1) were inspired by the efforts of 133-pounder Dyson Dunham, who defeated #28-ranked Blake Boarman by a 7-4 decision to give VMI three team points. Dunham earned a takedown in the first period, logged an escape in the second, then won the bout by registering a late takedown in the final minute of the third period to earn the 7-4 upset.

Chattanooga would go on to win the next four matches – two by fall – but the Keydets finished strong by winning three of the final four bouts.

At 174 pounds, Braxton Lewis grabbed a 9-5 decision over UTC's Sergio Desiante to give VMI three more points, then 184-pounder Toby Schoffstall provided four team points by achieving a dominant 17-5 major decision over Chattanooga's Logan Webster to trim the team score deficit to 25-10 with two bout remaining.

Chattanooga's David Harper pinned VMI's Josh Evans at 197 pounds, then VMI heavyweight Tyler Mousaw finished out strong by downing UTC's Kaleb Snodgrass by a hard-fought 1-0 decision.

The Keydets return to action next Sunday when they face rival The Citadel on the road. The match is set to begin at 2 p.m. in Charleston, South Carolina.
