CHARLOTTE, N.C.
– Competing in two non-conference duals before starting SoCon action next weekend, the VMI wrestling team earned two wins Sunday by rallying to defeat Sacred Heart, 24-17, before topping host Queens, 42-3, Sunday afternoon at Curry Arena in Charlotte, North Carolina.

With two wins on the day, VMI improves to 6-5 in dual action this season.

VMI 24, Sacred Heart 17
Down 7-0 early on to Sacred Heart, Patrick Jordon trimmed the deficit to 7-3 with an 11-5 decision over the Pioneers' Vincent Milazzo. With Sacred Heart ahead 10-3, VMI 157-pounder Josh Yost pinned SHU's Connor MacDonald in 3:53 to cut the Pioneer to 10-9 with five bouts to go.

VMI's Braxton Lewis (174 lbs.) gave VMI it's first lead of the match by pinning SHU's Owen Ayotte in 2:12 to bump the Keydets ahead, 15-14, with three bouts left. VMI 184-pounder Caleb Chandler was defeated by a close 4-2 decision to give the Pioneers a 17-15 lead, but Keydets Josh Evans (197) and Tyler Mousaw (HWT) took care of business by winning the final two bouts for VMI to give the Keydets a 24-17 victory in VMI's first match of the day.

Evans secured a VMI lead with an 8-1 decision over SHU's Jake Trovato, and Mousaw confirmed the win by pinning Brendan Gilchrist in 2:25 to put the match away.

VMI 42, Queens 3
At 125 pounds, VMI's Tony Burke earned a dominant 16-0 tech fall over Queens' Daniel Graham to open the match and the Keydets never looked back en route to their 42-3 win over the Royals.

The Royals managed a hard-fought 7-4 decision at 184 pounds to avoid a shutout, but the Keydets earned four tech falls, three pins and three decisions during the second match en route to an easy victory.

VMI Head Coach Jim Gibson
"Our guys won a gutsy first dual meet today against Sacred Heart. It came down to bonus points and we had three guys find a way to get pins, which made the difference for us.

"In the second match against Queens, we wrestled with confidence and aggression. It paid off with some big wins."
