VMI topped by Samford to end road trip

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Despite career-high point totals by Taeshaud Jackson II and Stephen Olowoniyi, the VMI basketball team fell to host Samford by a 134-96 score Saturday night at Pete Hanna Center in Birmingham, Alabama.
 
Jackson finished with 22 points on the night, besting his previous high of 16 set last season, and totaled a career-high six three-pointers to lead VMI. His previously set a career high with four treys last season at Western Carolina.
 
Olowoniyi logged a season-high 16 points during the contest to beat his prior best of 14 points from last week versus Mercer. He also achieved his first career double-double by grabbing 10 rebounds throughout the game.
 
In total, five Keydets scored in double figures as Tyran Cook (16), Brennan Watkins (15) and Devin Butler (12) reached the mark.


 
Inside the Box Score
*VMI totaled a season-high 27 turnovers in the loss by a Samford defense that employed a full-court press for the majority of the game. The Keydets surrendered 17 turnovers in the opening half that led to 33 points off turnovers and 46 total from the contest, including 26 fastbreak points
*Samford recorded 17 offensive rebounds leading to 23 second-chance points. The Bulldogs also had 76 points from a deep bench and controlled the interior with 72 points in the paint
*Freshman AJ Clark matched his season high with five assists to go with six points
*Eight Bulldogs finished in double figures scoring led by 18 from both Achor Achor and Riley Allenspach
 
Up Next
The Keydets return to Lexington for two home games next week. VMI will face Furman Wednesday night at 6 p.m. before taking on rival The Citadel Saturday at 1 p.m. at Cameron Hall.
