Culbreath named Stats Perform FedEx Ground National Special Teams Player of the Week

Senior punted nine times, performed kickoff and holding duties in win

LEXINGTON, Va. – Stats Perform announced their weekly awards Monday as VMI punter Jack Culbreath was named the FedEx Ground National Special Teams Player of the Week.

Monday afternoon, Culbreath added SoCon Special Teams Player of the Week honors as well.

Culbreath was crucial to the Keydets scoring a conference-opening win over Wofford on Saturday (17-14). The All-American punter punted the ball nine times for a total of 47.9 yards, pinning the Terriers inside the 20 five times, with a sixth going out at the 21-yard line.

Despite the rainy conditions, Culbreath was a perfect three-for-three on holds (two extra points, one field goal). Additionally, the Charlottesville native continued to handle kickoff duties for VMI, totaling 186 yards on four kickoffs.

"Jack (Culbreath) was great punting the ball," said VMI Head Coach Danny Rocco. "We made a big field goal. We squibbed the ball when we had to. It was a very muddy, wet surface."

Culbreath, who had four punts of 50-plus yards, boomed a 60-yarder towards the end of second quarter, helping set up a three and out for the Keydets, who would cash in with a touchdown on the ensuing series. In the second half alone, Culbreath hit three punts inside the 20, with two being inside the 12.

Culbreath's season average of 44.5 (punts) is 9th in the FCS, while his career totals of 6,190 punt yards and 42.9 punt average ranks seventh and third, respectively, among active FCS punters.
