Late Rally Earns DH Split for VMI Baseball vs. Samford

LEXINGTON, Va. – The VMI baseball team rallied all the way back from a 5-1 deficit Saturday in the second game of the day to earn an 8-7 victory and split a Southern Conference doubleheader with league-leading Samford University in Gray-Minor Stadium. The Keydets (23-21/7-7 SoCon) came back in the opener as well after trailing 6-1, but the Bulldogs eventually pushed across a pair of runs in the 11th inning for a 9-7 win.

Junior Cole Jenkins had three hits in each game and was 6-8 on the day. The Keydet bullpen was outstanding, allowing just four earned runs over 15 2/3 innings to allow for the two comebacks.

Game 1:
Samford used a five run second inning to take an early lead and held a 6-1 edge in the fifth inning. The Keydets scored two in the fifth and one in the sixth to cut the lead to 7-4 and knotted the game 7-7 with three in the eighth. A two-run home run in the top of the 11th provided the winning margin for the Bulldogs.

Game 1 Highlights:
*Ty Swaim and Trey Morgan each went 3-6 with a home run hitting #1 and #2 in the batting order
*Jed Barrett was 2-5 while Brett Cook drew three walks and stole two bases
*Hunter Sipe worked 2 2/3 frames of scoreless relief while Jack Thompson, Marcus Van Alstine and Caden Plummer combined for 3 1/3 innings, allowing just one unearned run, two hits and one walk
*John Anderson went 3-6 with a double and a home run for Samford

Game 2:
*Trailing 5-1 in the nightcap, the Keydet offense came to life with a six-run sixth inning, fueled by a two-run home run by Cole Garrett. Samford answered with two in the eighth to tie the game 7-7 but a Morgan sacrifice fly brought in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth. The Bulldogs had two on and two outs in the top of the ninth, but Van Alstine came on to record the final out and earn his first collegiate save. Freshman Derrell Fletcher-Knight tossed 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to pick up his first collegiate win.

Game 2 Highlights
*Grayson Fitzwater was 3-3 with a walk and two runs scored
*Swaim went 2-5 with a triple
*Cook had two hits, including a double
*Anderson again had a big game in the nightcap for Samford (24-20/10-5), going 2-4 with a double and a home run
