VMI Baseball Falls to Mercer in Series Finale

LEXINGTON, Va. – The VMI baseball team fell 22-15 to Mercer University Sunday in the third and final game of a Southern Conference series from Gray-Minor Stadium. The two teams split a doubleheader on Friday, and the squads combined for 86 runs over the weekend.

The Bears (26-15/8-4) took advantage of 17 hits and 13 walks to have big innings of six in the third and fifth innings and five in the sixth.

How it happened:
Mercer opened an 8-2 lead after its six-run third inning, but VMI countered with two in the third and five in the fourth to go ahead 9-8. The Bears took the lead for good with 11 combined runs in the fifth and sixth frames.

Highlights:
*Cole Jenkins fell just a double short of the cycle, driving in four runs and drawing a walk
*Ty Swaim was 4-6 with four runs scored, two doubles and two stolen bases
*Justin Starke was 2-4 with a home run and had three RBI
*Zac Morris was 2-5 and Jimmy Koza had two hits with two stolen bases
*Carter Sanford was 4-6 with four runs, four RBI and a home run for Mercer

Next Time:
VMI (21-19/6-5) hosts Norfolk State University Tuesday at 6 p.m. in a non-conference game.
