VMI Lacrosse Begins MAAC Play at LIU

LEXINGTON, Va. – After opening the season 3-3 in non-conference action, the VMI lacrosse team begins league play in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Saturday when the Keydets face Long Island University (LIU) at noon at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium in Brooklyn, New York.

VMI last competed in the MAAC as an associate member from 2003-13. In April 2022, VMI announced it would rejoin the MAAC after playing in the Southern Conference from 2015-22.

Last Time Out
Trailing by a slim 4-2 margin after the first quarter, the VMI lacrosse team could not manage to keep pace with host Bellarmine as the Knights took a 17-6 victory at home last Saturday afternoon at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium in Louisville, Kentucky.
The Knights (4-1) – receiving Top 25 votes in the latest USILA national poll - jumped to a 3-0 lead midway through the opening period, but VMI (3-3) countered with two consecutive goals by Wil Duffy and Thomas Williamson. Bellarmine then amped up its defensive effort and shut out the Keydets the remainder of the first quarter and the entire second quarter while adding five goals of their own to increase the advantage to 9-2 over the Keydets at the half.

About the Sharks (1-4, 0-0)
LIU also begins conference play this weekend after opening the season with a 1-4 start. The Sharks are coming off a hard-fought 12-8 victory over UMass Lowell this past weekend on the road after beginning the year with four consecutive losses at the hands of Merrimack, Lindenwood, Hofstra and Monmouth. All were respectable losses within six goals, including a close 8-9 loss to Lindenwood in its home opener.

Sean Boll leads the team in goals this season with nine while Brad Beck is close behind with seven on the year. Boll also leads the Sharks in points with 13, with Beck, Tom von Bargen and Nick Colantonio serving as fellow offensive leaders with eight points thus far. Boll and Colantonio are the key distributors with four assists apiece on the year.

Goalie Sean Gillman has played all but 38 minutes in the cage this season and has 46 saves to his credit to go with a .517 save percentage. He owns a 1-3 individual record and a 9.86 goals-against average.
