Water Polo set to host full weekend of MAAC Play

Keydets to play one match Saturday, two Sunday

LEXINGTON, Va. – The VMI Water Polo team prepares for an exciting weekend in Lexington, as the VMI Aquatic Center will serve as the host to 15 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) matches, including three for the Keydets.

All of the matches will be streamed live on ESPN+.

VMI's first match of the weekend is slated for 1:00 p.m. eastern Saturday, hosting Marist. The Keydets have two matches on Sunday, a 9:40 a.m. tilt with St. Francis before closing out the weekend against Mount St. Mary's at 6:00 p.m.

The Keydets enter the weekend with a 3-11 record but haven't played at home since their season opener on February 4. Saturday will also mark the first official Water Polo match at the VMI Aquatic Center which opened this semester.

Marist
The Red Foxes sit atop the MAAC Blue Division with a perfect 5-0 record in league play. Marist is 16-8 overall on the season, including a season-opening win over No. 20 Loyola Marymount University, and enter Saturday having won five straight. 

St. Francis
St. Francis posts an 11-4 record coming into the weekend, with a 2-3 record in MAAC play. The Terriers are an even 2-2 in their last four matches, splitting with conference foe Mount St. Mary's and defeating Siena. 

Mount St. Mary's
Also competing in the tough Blue division, Mount St. Mary's is an even 3-3 in league competition and is 11-7 on the season. The Mount scored two big victories over St. Francis and Sina, snapping a three-game skid in the process.

Senior Day
Sunday's match against Mount St. Mary's will serve as senior day for Gia Donatelli, Katie Lloyd and Sydney Shettleroe.

Gia Donatelli
Opening her career with eight goals and four assists as a freshman, Donatelli proved to be a strong attacker for the Keydets during her career, appearing in all 18 games in 2021. Last season, Donatelli had a career-high 23 goals and 12 assists, drawing 10 exclusions and 15 steals. The Murrieta, California, native has played in all 14 matches this season, scoring in 11 matches including three goals in a win over Carthage.

Katie Lloyd
A native of Caroline, Virginia, Lloyd worked her way into the lineup in 2021, picking up 75 saves and collecting four wins. Last year, Lloyd played every minute in net and totaled 180 saves. As a senior, Lloyd has appeared in all but one match, picking up three wins and recording a season-high 10 saves against Cal State East Bay.

Sydney Shettleroe
Shettleroe has proven to be the Keydets' go-to scorer, tallying eight goals as a freshman before 43 during her sophomore campaign. Last year, the Los Angeles, California native led VMI with 62 scores – the 10th-most all-time in a season at VMI. Shettleroe has scored in all but two matches including back-to-back five-goal outputs in wins over Carthage and UC Merced.
