LEXINGTON, Va. – Sophomore right-hander
Holden Wilkerson threw four hitless innings of relief Saturday as the VMI baseball team defeated Norfolk State University 11-9 in non-conference play from Gray-Minor Stadium. VMI improves to 11-2 at home this year and 12-8 overall.
How it happened:
With the wind blowing out, the teams combined for 11 runs in the first inning as VMI took a 6-5 lead in what looked to be a slugfest. After two Norfolk State runs in the third were answered by three Keydet tallies, both teams' pitchers settled down. The Spartans tied the game with two in the fifth, but Wilkerson shut the door on the visitors over his four innings to earn the win, walking two with three strikeouts.
James Newsome legged out an infield hit in the sixth to score
Trey Morgan to make the score 10-9 and VMI added an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth.
