LEXINGTON, Va. - The VMI baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader Saturday with Radford University, falling in game one 7-6 in seven innings and taking the nightcap 17-7 in eight innings in Gray-Minor Stadium.
The Keydet offense scored 23 runs on the day with 23 hits, four home runs, 14 walks and 12 stolen bases.
Game 1:
VMI trailed 7-1 in the fifth inning but fought back with two in the fifth and two in the sixth. The Keydets scored one in the seventh and had the tying runner at second base with two outs, but Radford got out of the jam.
Highlights:

Trey Morgan went 3-3 with a home run, a walk, two runs and two RBI

Cole Garrett was 2-3 with a home run and
Grayson Fitzwater went 2-4 with a double

Jack Thompson tossed 2 1/3 innings of hitless relief with two strikeouts

Ty Barker threw the last two innings allowing no runs, no hits and no walks with three strikeouts.
*Garrett Pancione hit a two-run home run for Radford
Game 2:
VMI jumped out early with six runs in the first and three in the second frame and closed out the scheduled nine-inning game early via the 10-run rule with four in the seventh and two in the eighth.
Highlights:

Justin Starke each finished just a triple away from the cycle. Morris was 3-4 with three runs, four RBI, a triple, a home run and two HBP. Starke was 3-4 with two walks, three runs, three RBI, a double and a home run

Jimmy Koza was 2-3 with a double, two runs scored and three RBI

Ty Swaim reached base three times and stole four bases
*
Brett Cook homered and was also hit by two pitches
*Morgan drew three walks and singled
*
Tyler Kaltreider tossed the final 4 2/3 innings, allowing just one run to earn the save
*Miles Levere homered for Radford (7-9)
