Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – The VMI women's water polo team opened the 2023 season at home Saturday morning against visiting Salem University (W. Va.), but fell 16-12 to the Tigers in Clark-King Pool.
The Keydets opened an early 3-1 lead after Caragh Osborne netted the first goal of spring season, followed by scores by Sydney Shettleroe and Gia Donatelli.
The Tigers ended the first period ahead 4-3 and extended the advantage to 13-7 in the fourth period before the Keydets closed the gap. Three-straight tallies from VMI made it a 13-10 game but the visitors held on.
Notables:
*Shettleroe had three goals and three assists to lead the VMI offense and also added three steals
*Sydney Smith posted two goals and three assists in her first collegiate game
*Sadie Smith, also playing in her first college game, compiled two goals and two assists
*Osborne and Donatelli each had two goals and an assist
*Courtney Novotny had a goal and two assists
*Katie Lloyd made seven stops in net
*Courtney O'Shaughnessy tallied a game-high four goals for Salem and added two assists

VMI will compete in the Macalister University (Minn.) Invitational Feb. 17-19, with four matches scheduled.
