LEXINGTON, Va.
– Looking to build off the momentum from the end of last season, the VMI lacrosse team picked up a hard-fought 14-11 victory over visiting Detroit Mercy Saturday afternoon at Drill Field No. 2 in Lexington.

VMI (1-0) earned its first win over the Titans (0-1) since the 2012 season, and just the second all-time in seven attempts. The 14 goals is also the most VMI has scored against Detroit, topping the previous high of 11 from last season. With the win, VMI earned its second season-opening win in the past three seasons.

The Keydets raced to a 6-2 lead after the opening quarter and ballooned the advantage to 11-5 at the half. Both teams logged three goals in the third period, and the Keydets allowed just three goals in the final quarter to hold on for the season-opening victory.

Game Summary
*VMI was led by four goals from senior attack Scout Ripley and three from sophomore Luke Mryncza
*Sophomore attack Luke Rusterucci tallied two goals and tied a career-high five assists
*In a complete game, freshman goalie Adam Norris earned his first career victory by earning 10 saves to preserve the win
*Detroit's Ryan Birney paced the Titans with five goals on the day while Drew Kessenich and Zach Snider both logged two. Luke Majick and Cole Gellatly were credited with two assists apiece
*Detroit goalies Jakob Hemme (37 mins) and Tyler Hart (22 mins) split time in the cage with Hemme earning seven saves to Hart's eight.

VMI Head Coach James Purpura
I'm really proud of our guys. They had a great week of practice preparing for a strong opponent. We started a few freshmen at key positions and they did a great job helping our team earn the result. Jack Rogers was great at the faceoff X going 16-for-25, and Adam Norris made some key saves as our goalie.

Offensively, our attack played well and has built more chemistry since the end of last season. We had two freshmen score key goals to add more depth in Will Gormsen and Austin English. We had a couple key defensive stands and cleared the ball well to play great complementary lacrosse.

Certainly, we will evaluate the tape and make corrections on areas where we need to continue to improve, but overall I was very happy with the effort."

Up Next
