CHARLOTTE, N.C.
 – Playing for its first 2-0 start since the 2019 season, the VMI lacrosse team accomplished the task by defeating Queens University of Charlotte by a 10-9 score in double overtime Friday afternoon at the Queens Sports Complex in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The game was the first ever meeting between the schools and also marked VMI's first overtime win since the 2014 season.

Senior Scout Ripley led the Keydets with five goals during the contest, including the walk-off goal at the 2:52 mark of the second overtime period, as neither team could score in the first overtime. The Keydets (2-0) won the possession battle by claiming 14 faceoffs to the Royals' nine and logged 36 ground balls to 31 for Queens.

Freshman keeper Adam Norris came up big for the Keydets by registering 22 saves throughout the game to preserve the win as Queens took 47 shots to VMI's 36 attempts.

VMI Head Coach James Purpura
"'I'm really proud of the guys for going on the road and earning a hard fought double overtime victory. Credit to Queens - they had a ton of energy for their home opener and we knew they'd give us their best effort. It's awesome for our guys to find a way to win. Freshman Adam Norris and Jack Rogers were outstanding in the middle of the field, stopping 22 shots and Jack winning 63.6 percent of the face offs. Scout Ripley led our offense and, when the game was on the line, he made the final play. We had some injuries during the week and guys stepping in with a great next-man-up mentality on our defensive end. There's certainly a lot of things we will look to clean up and improve on as we watch the tape, but I'm really proud of this young group and their determination to get better."
