Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va
. – Seeking its first 3-1 start to a season since the 2019 campaign, the VMI lacrosse team accomplished the mark by defeating instate foe Hampton University by a 20-10 score Tuesday afternoon at Drill Field #2.

The three wins in February marks the first time in program history that VMI has tallied three wins during the month. For the first time since 2012, VMI has played four consecutive games scoring in double digits.

Tied 2-2 midway through the first periods, VMI (3-1) started to pull away in the latter segment of the quarter by scoring four more goals while allowing just one to take a 6-3 lead going into the second quarter. The Pirates (0-2) struggled to keep pace with the Keydets as VMI logged five goals in both the second and third periods and added four more in the final stanza en route to the dominating 20-10 finish.

*Will Gormsen, Stamos, and freshman Austin English earned two goals on the day, while five others scored solo goals in the winning effort
*Defenders LT Ancona and Dylan McNally combined for seven caused turnovers to thwart several Pirate scoring opportunities
*Playing all but the final 3.5 minutes, freshman goalie Adam Norris earned the win with 10 saves to keep the Pirates at bay
*Hampton's Darius Stanley logged three goals during the contest, while Miles Fawcett contributed two other Pirate goals
*In 55 minutes of action, Pirate goalie Paxtin Powell earned seven saves while allowing 18 goals in his individual loss

VMI Head Coach James Purpura
"This was not our cleanest game, but I'm proud of our guys for finding a way to win. It's never easy winning games at this level. Credit to Hampton - they are coached well and played hard. We were without a few of our starters today and guys stepped up with a next-man-up mentality. We had a lot of guys earn their "firsts," including starts, goals, and assists, which is always special and something they will remember the rest of their lives.

"Luke Rusterucci paced the offense with a historic nine-point day and Tim Lindenbaum anchored our defense. Certainly, we have a lot to clean up and improve on. We have to be better at picking up ground balls all over the field. We also turned it over too many times and that certainly is something we can control and improve on. We have a quick turnaround and hit the road for a few weeks now, which is a great opportunity for our team to continue to grow."

Up Next
The Keydets play their next three games on the road starting this Saturday as they travel to upstate New York to face St. Bonaventure at noon.
