Longwood edges VMI Men’s Soccer 2-1

FARMVILLE, Va. – Despite a furious second-half comeback, the VMI men's soccer team fell 2-1 Tuesday evening at Longwood University in non-conference play at the Longwood Athletic Complex. 

How it happened
*Longwood goals by Tosin Ayokunle and Iago Rodriguez in the first half gave the Lancers a 2-0 lead at intermission 
*The Keydets came out strong in the second half and had several scoring opportunities before finally getting on the scoreboard 
*With just under six minutes left to play a set of quick passes from three freshmen led to a goal. Amari Benjamin chipped in a feed from Kyle Grant who had taken a cross from Freddy Ferguson 
*The Keydets had a final chance at a tie as freshman Jesse Lee got a shot off close to the goal but the Lancer goalie made the save as time expired 


Inside the numbers
*The Keydets held a 7-5 edge in shots in the second half with a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks 
*VMI earned a 9-7 edge in corner kicks overall and had 12 shots on the day 
*Colin Blandford, Cole Mooney, Lee and Conner Reid each had two shots 
*Zack Murphy made three saves for VMI 
*Lucas Muller made four stops for Longwood (4-2-2)   



Next Time
The Keydets host Furman University Saturday at 1 p.m. in a Southern Conference game. The program's four seniors will be honored in a pre-match ceremony on Senior Day.
