Cross Country teams perform well at SC Upstate Invite

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Competing for the final time for the SoCon championship in two weeks, the VMI cross country teams performed well Saturday morning at the 2023 USC Upstate Invitational held at the Milliken Research Arboretum in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

In an 8K race, the VMI men placed 13th overall in the field with 338 points. Charleston Southern finished first with 32 points between its top five runners.

Kevin Shank led the way for the Keydets as a true freshman by placing 28th overall in 25:16.8. Fellow freshman Patrick Lowry came in 66th in 25:53.8, and Ben Hagerich arrived just behind in 68th place in 25:57.6. Also scoring for VMI was junior Brian Tavenner in 135th place in 26:58.2 and senior Andrew Hirneisen (137th, 27:00.6).

Freshmen Michael Jorgensen finished the race in 27:16.8 and Colin Crenshaw registered a time of 27:41.3.

Patrick Kiernan, John Gibson, Nicholas Ligday and Michael Kelley also competed for VMI.

"This was a good meet to prepare our team for the Southern Conference Championship. The Millikan Research Arboretum is an incredible course. Our team beat The Citadel as Kevin Shank continues to be our No. 1 runner. As Kevin is getting faster, the rest of our team is closing the gap with 8K PRs throughout the team."

The Keydets prepare for the Southern Conference championship race, which is slated for Friday, Oct. 27 at the Ivey Redmond Sport Complex in Kernersville, North Carolina.
