LEXINGTON, Va. – The VMI men's soccer team netted the most goals in a single game since the 1999 season Wednesday, defeating visiting Regent University 9-0 in non-conference play from Patchin Field. VMI now has four wins on the year, the most for the program in 16 years (6-10-3 in 2007).
Freshman
Kyle Grant had two goals and one assist and was one of eight Keydets to find the back of the net as VMI scored early and often. Junior
Cole Mooney had a goal and two assists and junior
Grant Martin had a goal and an assist.
The Keydets opened the 1991 season with a 9-1 win over Limestone. The program record for goals in a single game is 12, set in 1979 against Chattanooga.
How it happened:
*Grant got the Keydets on the scoreboard just 4:35 into the game and followed 10 minutes later with his second tally of the game

Rider Holcomb, Mooney and Martin also scored in the first half as the Keydets opened a 5-0 edge at intermission

Inside the numbers:
*The Keydets nearly doubled their season goal total in one afternoon and have 19 on the year, compared to 12 last season. Five regular-season contests remain on the schedule with at least one conference tournament game.
*Grant has five goals and three assists on the season, while Mooney has two goals and five assists.

VMI (4-9) will close out the home portion of its 2023 season Saturday with a Southern Conference home match against ETSU at 2:30 p.m. on Patchin Field.
