Men Place Sixth at Spider Alumni Open

RICHMOND – Looking to get off to a strong start to the 2022 season, the VMI men's cross country team accomplished the feat by placing sixth overall against solid competition Saturday morning at the Richmond Spider Alumni Open at Pole Green Park in Richmond, Virginia.

D. Alex Fiorillo led the way for VMI by placing 20th overall with a 6K time of 18:43.4 while senior Trent Whittaker arrived in 36th overall in 19:26.5. Freshman Nicholas Ligday got off to a great start to his VMI career by placing 47th overall in 19:53.0, and senior Stephen Kelley came in 51st overall in 19:57. Sophomore Brian Tavenner also scored team points by finishing 54th overall in 20:02.

VMI Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Zack Scott:
"Our first cross country meet of the 2022 season with a wide mix of D1 teams provided great competition for everyone on our team. You can see the physical training is going well by the race split times, which is evidence of their conditioning with consistent times and some faster times toward the end of the race. Now we have to get them to believe how great they can be."
