Keydets Fall to UNCG in SoCon Opener at Home

LEXINGTON, Va. – Looking to open conference play strong at home against UNCG, the VMI women's soccer team fell by a 3-0 score to the Spartans Friday evening at Patchin Field.
  
How it happened
* In the 10th minute of the match, UNCG's Mel Herrera found Maddy Gilhool open in the center of the VMI goalbox, who received the ball and put it past VMI keeper Jillian Hall for an early 1-0 Spartan lead.
* Moments later, UNCG's Hannah Morton crossed to the middle and found Parker Sikora for another Spartan score to increase the advantage to 2-0 at the 11:34 mark.
* Midway through the second half, UNCG's Maddy Gilhool took a shot that ricocheted off VMI keeper Jillian Hall and the ball bounced over to Ciani Ricks, who took the rebound and put it into the open net for an additional insurance goal at the 63:09 mark.
 
Close Calls
VMI sophomore Isabella Bruzonic nearly scored a goal midway through the second half, but her shot to the upper right corner was pushed away by UNCG goalie Abby Buchholz for a diving save.

Inside the numbers
* The Spartans earned 20 shots and nine corner kicks on the evening to maintain control of the possession battle.
* VMI freshman Riley Boucher led the Keydets with two shot attempts for the day while four others had one to finish with six.
* Hall finished the day with seven saves for VMI
 
Next Time
VMI takes a quick step out of conference play to face South Carolina State Sunday afternoon. Kickoff is set for a 1 p.m. start at Patchin Field. The event has also been designated by the coaching staff as Senior Day – seniors Anissa Cheikh, Abi Dent and Kaitlyn Tippie will be recognized in a presentation set for 12:10 p.m. at midfield.
