SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference announced its Student-Athlete of the Week award on Wednesday afternoon, with VMI Football's Collin Ironside earning the award.
A quarterback, Ironside entered Saturday's game against Cornell and helped engineer a comeback effort against the Big Red. The redshirt sophomore went 16-for-18 with a career-high 275 yards while passing and rushing for a touchdown.
A native of Knoxville, Tennessee, Ironside is a Business and Economics major and has previously earned SoCon Honor Roll status and has a 4.0 GPA.
With under six minutes to play, a 41-yard dart to Leroy Thomas set up a Hunter Rice rushing touchdown followed up by a touchdown pass to Chance Knox on the next possession. Getting the ball back with 1:28 to play, Ironside marched the team down the field and registered his first career rushing touchdown to pull VMI to within one score with five seconds remaining, but VMI would run out of time and fall 28-22 to Cornell.
