Keydets Fall to High Point

Box Score

HIGH POINT, N.C. - Despite a strong second half of play, the VMI lacrosse team fell by a 16-5 score to host High Point Friday night at Vert Stadium in High Point, North Carolina.

High Point (6-5, 1-1) jumped to a 5-0 lead after the first quarter over the Keydets (3-8, 1-1) and extended the advantage to 12-2 at the half. After the Panthers added three more scores in the third quarter, the Keydets outscored High Point by a 3-1 tally in the final period.

The Panthers took hold of the possession battle throughout the game by securing 18 of 25 faceoffs and forced turnovers on 10 VMI clearing opportunities. Both teams went 0-1 during extra-man scoring opportunities.

"Credit to High Point, they played fast and executed their game plan at a high level," said VMI head coach James Purpura. "It was a good learning experience for our young guys to play against an experienced and talented team that won the conference championship last year. I'm proud of our guys for continuing to fight and play a tough second half. We will learn from the tape, make corrections, and start preparing for our next opponent."

Hartley Jordan led the Keydets with two goals on the night while Luke Rusterucci, AJ Stamos and Owen Houston were credited with one score apiece. Jordan finished with nine shots during the match while Rusterucci took five.

Alex Baber led the defensive efforts with two forced turnovers for the evening. Goalie Jack Liselli earned 10 saves during the loss.

Asher Nolting led the Panthers with four goals and Brayden Mayea contributed a hat trick with three goals of his own. Jack Vanoverbeke and Jack Sawyer were both credited with two scores.  A trio of High Point goalies preserved the win with 16 saves in the victory.

VMI returns to action next Saturday at noon to continue Southern Conference action facing nationally ranked Jacksonville on Drill Field No. 2.
