Keydets Defeated by #8 Jacksonville

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va. - Facing a Top 10 team at home for the first time in seven years, the VMI lacrosse team fell by a 25-6 score to visiting #8 Jacksonville Saturday afternoon at Drill Field No. 2.

The Dolphins (11-2, 3-0) jumped ahead by an 8-3 score after the opening period and eventually build a 14-3 lead at the half after keeping VMI (3-9, 1-2) scoreless in the second stanza.  VMI built some momentum near the end of the opening quarter when Jacksonville committed an own goal at the 5:14 mark and the Keydets put in two more scored in the final two minutes of the period off goals by Josh Bass and Hartley Jordan.

"Credit to Jacksonville," said VMI head coach James Purpura. "They're a Top 10 team for a reason and showed it today. They dominated ground balls and at the face off X, which made the possession battle weigh heavily in their favor. I'm proud that our guys didn't quit and, for a young team, they got to experience what battling a top 10 opponent entails. Ultimately, we want to get that level as we build this program and today albeit not the result we want, was a valuable learning lesson for us moving forward."

VMI opened the second half strong with an early goal in the third quarter by Thomas Williamson as the Keydets took advantage of a man-up opportunity.

The Dolphins responded with 10 unanswered goals over the remainder of the third period and most of the fourth before VMI scored again with 1:23 left on the clock on a goal by senior Jack Burke. Mike Tulskie would score one more for the Keydets with 29 seconds to play for VMI's final tally of the match.

Jackson Intrieri finished the game with seven goals for the Dolphins while Max Waldbaum contributed four. Tyler Corpora and Sam Chase each added a pair for Jacksonville.

VMI goalie Jack Liselli logged 16 saves over three quarters of play before he was replaced by freshman Trey Riemann for the fourth quarter. Riemann was credited with five saves over the final 15 minutes of play. Jacksonville goalie Luke Millican earned the win with three saves and three goals allowed.

The Keydets return to action next Saturday for Senior Day at Drill Field No. 2 when VMI takes on Hampton for the second time this season at noon on Drill Field No. 2.
