Track and Field off to Strong Start at SoCon Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The VMI women's track and field team opened Day 1 of the Southern Conference Outdoor Championships with success as the Keydets are in eighth place overall with four points after Saturday's events at Samford's Shauna Yelton Field at Samford Track and Soccer Stadium in Birmingham, Alabama.
 
Freshman Eleyah Armstrong qualified for the finals Sunday by placing ninth overall in the 100 meter dash in 12.32 seconds. Senior Ahliyah Williams qualified for the finals in the 400m dash with her ninth-place time of 59.43 seconds in the preliminary round.
 
Ellie Miller placed seventh overall in the javelin throw with a distance of 35.63 meters, and Alexis Rocker came in eighth place in the hammer with a distance of 41.83 meters.
 
In the 3,000 meter steeplechase, Naomi Hahn led VMI with an eighth-place time of 11:56.97 and freshman Gretal Shank finished right behind in ninth in 12:03.55.
 
 
VMI Director of Track and Field Zack Scott:
"We have another day and seven more events with VMI competitors to move up the team rankings Sunday. I am looking forward to seeing what our coaches and women can do to move up the Southern Conference ranks Sunday."
