Keydets Fall to Bellarmine in Return Home

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va. - Despite building a 6-5 lead at the half, the VMI lacrosse team fell by a 17-8 score in its return home to Drill Field No. 2 as visiting Bellarmine University took control in the second half to earn the win Saturday afternoon in Lexington.

After Bellarmine (2-8) jumped to a 2-0 lead in the opening two minutes of the game, the Keydets (2-6) responded with two goals of their own to match the score as freshman Luke Mryncza and junior Scout Ripley put in the scores.

The Knights' Kyle Playsted notched another Bellarmine goal to close the opening period with a 3-2 advantage. Denton Macdonald added another Bellarmine goal early in the second period to extend the lead to 4-2 before VMI's Ripley scored again to make the score 4-3 Bellarmine with 12:27 before the half.

After a Bellarmine goal moments later, the Keydets closed the first half with three unanswered goals by Ripley (2) and Hartley Jordan for the 6-5 halftime lead for VMI.

"We didn't play our best game today," said VMI head coach James Purpura. "We let Bellarmine back in the game when a few bounces didn't go our way and that spiraled into self-inflicted mistakes. Our young team needs to learn to prevent momentum swings and have that next-play mentality. We will watch the tape, make corrections and start to prepare for a strong Cleveland State team."

After another VMI score early in the third quarter by Mryncza, Bellarmine went on to log 10 unanswered goals over the course of the third period and early fourth period to gain a commanding 15-7 lead with 10:41 left in regulation.

Brayden Brown led the Knights with six goals during the game and Kyle Playsted scored four to lead Bellarmine to victory. Christian DellaRocca registered three of his own.

Ripley finished the game with four goals for the Keydets to go with Mryncza's two. Josh Bass and Hartley added the other scores. Trejan Cannon led VMI's defensive effort with four caused turnovers during the match.

Knight goalie JC Higginbotham earned the win with eight saves and eight goals allowed while VMI's Jack Liselli picked up the loss despite eight saves.

VMI returns to action on the road next Saturday when they travel to face Cleveland State. Faceoff is slated for a noon start in Cleveland, Ohio.
