VMI Downed at Cleveland State

Box Score

CLEVELAND - Playing on the road for the fourth time in five outings, the VMI lacrosse team fell by a 22-10 score to host Cleveland State Saturday afternoon at Krenzler Field in Cleveland, Ohio.

VMI (2-7) got behind 4-1 after the opening period and trailed by a 10-5 count at the half, but Cleveland State (3-5) never relinquished the pressure by scoring 12 times in the second half and allowing just five VMI goals to earn the win.

"Credit to Cleveland State," said VMI head coach James Purpura. "They are well-coached and did a good job capitalizing on their opportunities on offense. They won at the face off X and won the ground ball battle which again led to them dominating possession time. We have to find a way to dig in and get stops and value possessions on offense to help limit that margin. I thought offensively we were well spread out and generated some solid looks throughout the game. Lastly, we took too many penalties today and got beat in the specials team game giving up four man-down goals and not capitalizing when we were man up.

"Our out-of-conference schedule gave us some solid competition to help prepare for a strong SoCon schedule. We've grown as a team and our young guys continue to gain valuable experience. We look forward to continuing the journey of hard work and development and want to continue to make positive history down the stretch."

The Keydets were penalized a total of eight times which led to four man-up goals for the Vikings.

Cleveland State's Ryan Haigh led the way with six goals while Jason Sullivan and Adam Clark both contributed four. Gannon Mathews also scored a pair of goals in the Viking win.

VMI's Hartley Jordan led VMI with two goals while eight others scored individual goals.

CSU goalie Cameron Logan earned the win with nine saves in just under 50 minutes in the cage, while VMI's Jack Liselli took the loss despite seven saves in 45 minutes of action.

The Keydets return home next Saturday to begin SoCon play against Mercer. Faceoff is set for a 12 p.m. start at Drill Field No. 2.
