LEXINGTON, Va. – The VMI baseball team hosts Lehigh University this weekend in a three-game non-conference series. Due to possible impending rain on Saturday, two games are scheduled for Friday and a single game Sunday. Friday's doubleheader is slated to begin at 3 p.m. while first pitch on Sunday is set for 1 p.m.
The first game of Friday's doubleheader is slated for seven innings while the second game is set for nine.
The Keydets (7-6) beat Penn State 11-4 on Tuesday but fell to Holy Cross Wednesday 5-1, both at home.
Will Knight and
Brett Cook each drove in three against the Nittany Lions and five
Keydet pitchers limited Penn State to just eight hits and one walk on the day. Freshman
Caden Plummer earned his first collegiate win with three solid innings and four strikeouts and
Will Riley earned his first save with three innings of relief, striking out five.
Nathan Light threw a scoreless frame and
Adam Jewell worked 2/3 of a scoreless inning. Justin
Starke, this week's Southern Conference Player of the Week, went 3-4 with a walk and two runs scored. Knight and
Trey Morgan were each 2-5 while
Zac Morris had a hit, two walks and two runs.
Against Holy Cross, Cook broke up a combined no-hit bid with a solo home run to left center field in the seventh inning, VMI's sole hit of the day. The Keydet bats had been on a tear the last week, scoring 44 runs over the last four games.
Lehigh is 5-5 on the season with all 10 games on the road. The Mountain Hawks dropped two of three at Delaware State last weekend, avoiding the sweep Sunday with a 7-3 win.
