VMI Falls to St. Bonaventure in Overtime

LEXINGTON, Va. - Despite evening the score at 4-4 early in the third period and taking a 7-5 lead minutes later, the VMI lacrosse team fell in overtime to visiting St. Bonaventure by a 9-8 score Saturday afternoon at Drill Field No. 2.
 
After trailing 2-1 after the opening period and 4-3 at the half, the Keydets (1-3) caught up to the Bonnies (2-1) at 4-4 at the 13:32 mark of the third quarter when freshman Chris Golini scored an unassisted goal. St. Bonaventure's Conor Murphy put the visitors back up 5-4 a few minutes later, but the Keydets responded with three unanswered goals to go up, 7-5. VMI's Luke Rusterucii, AJ Stamos and Hartley Jordan were credited with the goals during the Keydet rally.
 
The Bonnies' Sean Westley cut the deficit to 7-6 off an unassisted goal with just a few seconds left before the fourth quarter. St. Bonaventure continued its momentum going into the final quarter with two consecutive goals to put the Bonnies back up, 8-7, with 13:13 to play in regulation.

"I'm proud of our guys and the will they had to fight today," said VMI head coach James Purpura. "It's not the result that we wanted but our guys never quit and battled back multiple times to force an overtime. Our team continues to improve and is close to taking that next step. We will remain hungry and humble, continue to learn from our mistakes and make corrections."
 
Both teams had opportunities to score in the final period, but both defenses stood their ground until the final minute when VMI's Hartley Jordan tied the score at 8-8 with only 51 seconds to play and ultimately force overtime.
 
In the extra period, St. Bonaventure's Sean Westley scored the game-winning goal with only 57 seconds left to play to give the Bonnies the road victory in overtime.
 
The Keydets won the shots count by a 46-32 margin and had 32 groundballs to the Bonnies' 23, but were unable to convert on man-up opportunities as they went 0-2 on the day. St. Bonaventure won the faceoff count by claiming 11 of 21 and had 20 turnovers to VMI's 18.
 
St. Bonaventure goalie Brett Dobson won his second individual game of the season to improve to 2-1 for the year as he logged 17 saves throughout the match in 63 minutes. VMI's Jack Liselli falls to 0-2 for the season despite 10 saves during the game.
 
The Keydets hit the road for three consecutive games with the first coming up this Friday, March 4, at Mount St. Mary's. Faceoff is slated for a 3 p.m. start in Emmitsburg, Maryland.
